Description | With respect to the multitude of terms used to describe free, independent functioning of an individual and to the salience of this idea in life-span development, this study provides a review of the concepts of autonomy currently used in psychology. The review is structured from two perspectives: psychology of individual differences and developmental psychology with emphasis on adolescence and emerging adulthood. From both these perspectives the reviewed concepts of autonomy may be categorised into two groups: experiential-subjective autonomy focused on the experience of choice and authorship of own behaviour and objective concepts focusing on specific kinds of interpersonal (in) dependence and its development. Especially with the latter approaches the content of each individual construct is clear from their operationalizations that are also included in the review. |
