Description | The contribution examines the literary image of violence and cruelty in selected texts belonging to Latin literature of Late Antiquity. For naturalistic descriptions of corporal suffering are usually the attributes of the martyrological literature of this time, works from three different cathegories have been chosen: Lactantius' historiographical writing De mortibus persecutorum, the epos Psychomachia of Prudentius, and Vita Ambrosii of Paulinus of Milan, representing biographies of Saints - Confessors. The contribution deals with the genre context, analyzes different functions of the violence, and methods used to incorporate it into the texts. |
