| Description | The paper summarizes current research approaches to the crime against the Roman state (or the emperor) during the Principate. It focuses on presenting different opinions on the existence, date and content of the treason law of Augustus, for it is the starting point for discussions about the poena legis and legalization of extraordinary judicial means. Even though no final conclusions can be made regarding judicial torture due to inconclusive nature of the sources, a solution can be accepted for the punishment, i.e. a generally more or less congruent "multigrade" model embracing banishment (probably being the only legal punishment), and the death penalty as well. |
