Description This review paper introduces some parallel manifestations of symbolic forms that are found in residential buildings by Princes of Liechtenstein and Dietrichstein in the 17th and 18th centuries. There are shown the interrelated ideas of ancestral memory and piety ("memoria and pietas") in the 17th century, the building of "a large and a small altana" in the first half of the 18th century and the neo-classical and noble representations in the late 18th century. In the history of the residences of both noble families did not change the functions and external appearance of the castle only, but also the way is transformated in which the patron and his artists at different times approached to building up and rebuilding of their residences.
