| Description | The Great French Revolution received mixed reactions in Czech intellectual circles of the 19th and 20th centuries. On the one hand, a number of scholars rejected the revolution and its effects. Some objected to it in the context of the enlightenment reforms of Joseph II and the Czech national enlightenment of the turn of 18th and 19th centuries. Others rejected the violence of the revolution. On the other hand, French Revolution contributed to the adoption of democratic ideals of freedom and equality in Czech thought. Both tendencies are illustrated by the ideas of Josef Jungmann, Bernard Bolzano, František Palacký, T. G. Masaryk, Jan Patočka and other intellectuals. |
