Description Historigraphy has constructed and then deconstructed the myth of a Petrine iconography, the so-called Traditio legis. With this work we intend to revisit this topic from a more complex point of view. We aim to reflect on the very notion of Traditio legis, expanding the scope of inquiry geographically: beyond the circles of Rome, the traditional focus of study, our analysis takes account of outside realities, such as the apsidal mosaic in the church of Cromi, in Georgia, datable to the seventh century. We also studied the perception that images defined as Traditio legis had in the course of the Middle Ages. Particular attention, finally, is dedicated to the situation in Rome during the first centuries after the year 1000.
