Description | A century after the first Russian edition, this volume presents the first part - and this is a first for the Western reader - of one the most important writings of the early twentieth century in Russia. Work of Nikodim P. Kondakov, the Iconography of the Mother of God is a true document about the studies on sacred art in the history of pre-revolutionary Russia. With a positivist perspective, and with an impressive amplitude of horizons, Kondakov tells the story of the Marian cult and its figurative evidences between East and West in the first millennium of Christian history. Between the lines of the text, however, we can read the history of the empire of the Tsars who - unaware of what he would live just a few years later - search to define its cultural identity and its historical mission. This edition want therefore to present the contemporary reader the thought of the great Kondakov, while giving him the tools to understand his cultural background. |
