Description Half of the world’s population lives in cities and rapid urbanization is likely to continue in the future - almost 80% of Europeans will live in cities by 2030.Risking a slight simplification we can say that the future of Europe lies with old people in cities. In the context of Czech Republic, the historical city centres are also the demographically oldest parts of the biggest cities. Their physical and social structures are changing as a consequence of globalization, increased mobility, de-industrialization, commercialization, disappearing residential functions, or suburbanization – to name a few. How are these accelerating changes, brought in full only with the transformation from a planned to a free market economy in 1990´s, perceived by ageing inhabitants? How these changes influence their sense of control and their agency? Is the agency intervening or outcome variable of their living environment?
