Description The central topic of the study is the issue of burnout syndrome in relation to meaningfulness of life and interpersonal values in population of nurses. Main goal of this research is to determine the degree of correlation between meaningfulness and individual dimensions of burnout syndrome and to identify which interpersonal values correlate with individual dimensions of burnout syndrome in positive or negative way. The research sample consists of 96 nurses working in psychiatric wards of psychiatric hospitals in the Czech Republic. For data colection we used Maslach Burnout Inventory (Maslach, Jackson, 1981) Scale of life meaningfulness (Halama, 2002) and the and SIPO inventory to assess interpersonal orientation and values (Mikšík, 2004). Results of this study proved the significant relations between burnout syndrome and meaningfulness. The degree of meaningfulness shows statistically significant positive relation to personal accomplishment and negative relation to degree of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. Among the interpersonal values, manifestation of dominance and manifestation of altruism have been identified as protective factors of burnout syndrome. Values of requiring recognition and understanding as well as manifestation of conformity have been identified as risk factors. Interesting additional information were obtained through analysis of respondents' answers to open questions regarding the perceived positives and negatives of their work and mental health support by the employer.
