Citation
Description The article focuses on the problems associated with transnational (Russko-Czech) usage of chrematonyms – names of companies, organisations, institutions, products, documents, periodicals, artistic groups, and other outcomes and product of human activity that are not infixed in nature. Chrematonyms are special in that they are a sort of transition phase between common and proper nouns, because the content aspect of most chrematonymic nouns usually bears meaning and is important for comprehending a text's overall meaning (which means that such proper names have both an identification function and a semantic function). For this reason, chrematonyms are often translated using methods that focus on the content, rather tan the form, of a proper name. The first part of the article is partially devoted to chrematonym's place within the taxonomy of proper names. It also presents some suitable translation methods for handling chrematonyms. The second part analyses the individual classes of chrematonyms in detail and, using examples, demonstrates the options available and pitfalls expectable when transferring them to a new linguistic environment. The text also contains a comparison table showing the difference between Czech and English transcription from Russian into the Latin script.
