Description | Medieval expectations concerning India were based on the works of authors of antiquity, which concerned many typical topoi - human monsters, fascinating flora and fauna, great wealth. Medieval travels, which are reported mainly by Christian missionaries such as Odoric of pordenone, John of Montecorvino, John of Marignola or Jordan of Catala however describe a very different land. Together with the report of Marco Polo these accounts contain unexpected and new information concerning local crops, spices as well as the life of local peoples. |
