Description Fortifications also included refuges. In prehistory and early modern times, refugial and residential functions have merged so that pure refuges were rare. Building of refuges (fortified churches, rural castles) in lands threatened by raids was instigated later by the ruler or by free municipalities. It also found use in other regions (South France, Central Germany) with castles, towns, monasteries or fortified villages. Similar fortifications can be found in our country as well. Among them also are monasteries where, however, monks were always separated from people searching for refuge.
