Citation
Description There have been long disputes among scholars on the content, dating and even existence of an Augustan law on maiestas; however, they have only come to the conclusion that based on the evidence at hand the existence of such a law cannot be either confirmed or refuted. The contribution aims at the question of the prosecution of libel and defamatory writings under the reign of Augustus and other emperors of the Principate; it deals with the problem of the dichotomy maiestas of the state - maiestas of the princeps and the protection of the people close to the emperor.
