Description | The publication "Introduction to Software Studies" informs students about the dominant trend of new media studies development in last fifteen years, where we can observe an increasing interest of new media theorists about how the materiality of software affects and shapes our society and thus influences our world. We can therefore speak of 'software turn' in new media studies. A symptom of this trend is emergence of Software studies, a loose set of research practices on the border line between theory and practice that has been transforming new media studies since the beginning of the 21 century. The publication introduces Software studies launch as an outcome of certain conceptual tendencies within the new media studies discourse (Kittler, Flusser, Manovich, Cramer, Fuller), it defines landmarks of its institutionalization, as well as fundamental methodological approaches that are defined in close relation to other new sub-disciplines of the field, Critical code studies, Platform studies, and Evil media studies. |
