Description The aim of this paper is to analyse the narrative structure of a group of spiritually beneficial tales, all dealing with the same topics; a monk who had fallen into the Devil's snare. We have chosen a group of five tales from the following collections originating from the 4th to the 12th century: Historia monachorum in Aegypto, Historia Lausiaca by Palladios, Pratum Spirituale by John Moschos, the collection of Paul of Monembasia and Panegyrike by Neophytos Enkleistos. Using the structuralist methodology (R. Barthes, C. Bremond, A. Greimas), which separates the basic story line from the expansions, I am showing the character of the expansions and presenting the roles of the characters. The aim is to examine the effectiveness of application of the structuralist narrative theory on the Byzantine narrative texts and to contribute to a better understanding of the genre's evolution.
