| Description | The novella as a literary genre in the literature in German has been firmly delimited since the times of German classical literature at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Johann Wolfgang Goethe determined as a condition for assigning it to this "Gattung" (genre) a presupposition that the novella depicts in the dramatic plot "an unprecedented event" (eine unerhörte Begebenheit). This demand was met, above all, in the prose works written by Heinrich von Kleist, and his conception of the novella has been valid in German literature up to now. Later the Austrian literary modernism enriched this tradition by the genre of the psychological novella (Arthur Schnitzler, Stefan Zweig and others). The poetics of the 20th-century literature brought a substantial opening of the firmly defined genres that has markedly touched the understanding of the novella. The folllowing parts of the present contribution deal with the prose works which maintain - even in contemporary literature of recent fifty years – the strict criteria of the German novella (Christa Wolf, Franz Fühmann, Martin Walser, Siegfried Lenz, Günter Grass). |
