Description Past researches suggest the existence of culturally determined differences in visual perception and related cognitive processes such as visual attention and memory. The researches inspired by Nisbetts theory of holistic and analytic cognitive style found significant differences in these processes among the individuals from East Asian cultures and the West. While the Westerners show a tendency to focus their attention to so called focal objects and their attributes, East Asians have a tendency for a holistic perception of the visual field and they focus their attention on background objects and the mutual relationships among focal and background objects. In this paper we would like to introduce the theory of holistic and analytic perception and some methods of its measurement.
