Description | The introductionary chapter summarizes recent „turns“ in geography and other social sciences and humanities. Culture became emphasised as an important and independent category of inquiry in the social sciences (cultural turn). Social research have shifted its focus closer to human beings and their ways of life. Beside rationality of human behavior and large-scale systems and structures the attention is paid to actors, values, (sub)cultures and particular contexts, hybridity of structures and processes of their production and change etc. Language turn shifted attention to possibilities and limits which language makes for human identities and social actions. This epistemological change inspires research on new issues which were previously overlooked, such as feminist or queer perspectives, private, semi-private or alternative spaces. Moreover, new insights have stimulated debates on social space, spatial justice or rural geography. Simultaneusly with the cultural turn in geography, other social sciences and humanities started to pay more attention to space and spatial contexts (spatial turn). |
