Description This contribution sets out to uncover, on the basis of written and archaeological sources, the origin of a settlement in Veselí nad Moravou from the high Middle Ages and its transformation into a town. Archaeological research has confirmed that the settlement probably came into existence in connection with the establishment of the local castle, around the mid 13th century. It did not become a town until the late 14th century, despite the fact that some evidence indicates that the transformation might have occurred earlier. When studying the transformation of the Veselí settlement into a town, it is necessary to deal with the fragmentary nature of written sources, and to take into consideration the specific evolution of the settlement on the Morava River and its location in the border region.
