Description | The author of the article focused on the approach to liberalism in the 1850s and the 1860s works of B. N. Chicherin. In the 1850s, Chicherin clearly described himself as a liberal. He even compiled the first complex collection of solutions to Russian problems, based on the thoughts of European liberalism. He called it Sov-remennyje zadači russkoj žizni. However, in the following years, nearly all young, reform-supporting intellectuals and also supporters of the radical opposition against tsarist regime started to call themselves liberals. That is why Chicherin seeked the accurate term for his moderate attitudes. This seeking is represented by his articles Mera i granicy, Čto takoje ochranitělnyje načala and Različnyje vidy liberalizma. In these works, he poignantly assessed and glossed contemporary political views of Russian intelligentsia. It arises from his works, that liberal-ism in Russian background was more a complex of values than a real political program. |
