Description This paper deals with the analysis of the contemporary South Slavic superhero comics‘ characters. First, the general characteristics of the classic superhero genre (which is the most popular comic genre) are addressed, while paying special attention to the South Slavic comic book production; a superhero is recognized when he bears obligatory characteristics (the superpowers, a mission, etc.) and specific facultative attributes (e.g., a sidekick). Subsequently, the particular local cultural contexts that shape the South Slavic superhero characters are discussed. It seems to be significant for these types of heroes that they reflect particular cultural myths and stereotypes and develop the superhero genre in its own way. The variety of the South Slavic comics‘ superhero characters opens up new perspectives on the study of the Slavic culture in the Balkans.
