Description The paper described from semiotic perspective the way of creating a patriotic identity and loyalty in public rituals, which were initiated by the Sokol, the Czech nationalistic gymnastic movement, in the second half of the 19th century. For theatrological semiotic analysis of the structure of public ritual, the Consecration of Sokol Flag, which took place June 1 1862, was chosen. By this ritual, the Sokol ostensively informed Prague society about own existence. The interdisciplinary methodological approach to this issue is based mainly on the findings of performance studies, theatre studies, semiotics and cultural anthropology. In this sense, the paper contributes with specific, so far unused method of analysis of the historical events and brings new insights, which can define their meaning more precisely.
