| Description | In the era of globalization, translation has become particularly vital in transmitting linguistic and cultural messages from one language to another across cultural barriers. This has resulted in a substantial need for translation in the entertainment industry, particularly films. In movies, translation is culturally determined communication and is widely known as ‘movie translation' or 'subtitling’. This study centers on an analysis of the utilization of strategic choices for the translation of place-names and proper names found in subtitles, from Thai into English, of the Thai comedy movie ‘Hello Stranger’. In the present study, theoretical frameworks provided by noted translation theorist Hermans and extensively well-informed studies by Eirlys E. Davies and Fernandes were primarily used as sources. This article first presents different theoretical aspects related to the issue of translation, particularly subtitling. Then, readability in translation, in which foreignization and domestication considerations are considered, is discussed. This study has been enriched with empirical findings of the translated items, showing that seven out of ten strategies were used by the subtitler in transferring proper names and places from Thai into English where strategies of transcription, conventionality, and addition hold the highest volume of the most frequently used strategic choices respectively and, in contrast, copy, transposition, and deletion strategies are not found to be used. |
