Description The author of the present article analyzes the notion of the literary cannon how it has been conceived in Western literary criticism in relation to the notion of world literature. He demonstrates the obstacles of the axiological conception of world literature, the problem of positive discrimination and Ďurišin's representational conception of world literature. At the example of Igor Sukhich's book The Russian Canon he shows the problem of the selection of the so-called best works of the 20th-century authors. The problem consists especially in the fight for power in literature and in literary criticism and literary history; it is related to the conceiving of the canon which is influenced by taste, ideology, aesthetics and individual approaches. The factors represent an obstacle of a more objective view of aesthetic values of literary artefacts and the whole state of literature in this world.
