Description | The paper introduces the most extensive medieval encyclopaedia called Speculum maius completed by Vincent of Beauvais in the 50s of the 13th century. The two parts of this encyclopaedia are especially helpful to modern philologists studying medieval medical texts – Speculum naturale and Speculum doctrinale. Both contain altogether over 20 books dedicated to physiology, pharmacology, dietetics, surgery and pathology; thus, they offer quick instructions regarding all these fields in one place. The author of the paper, with the example of one of these fields – so called materia medica, demonstrates that Vincent drew from all important professional pharmacological sources known in his times. Thanks to his work with the sources (juxtaposition of different, even contradictory opinions, auctorial commentary), his Specula present a valuable source for all those who want to gain general knowledge not only of medieval medicine, but also of contemporary medical terminology. |
