Description The paper examines the role which the Cyril-Methodius tradition played in the 19th century and early 20th century in religious, national and political developments in Moravia, and examines Masaryk’s criticism of the Young Czechs’ demand for the introduction of a Slavonic liturgy. The study shows that throughout the 19th century the Cyril-Methodius idea was used both by the church (unionism) and by national and political groups and even political parties. However, while the demand for Slavonic worship had obvious national-political aims for the Young Czechs in Bohemia, in Moravia the Young Czech oriented Lidová strana (People’s Party) attempted to use this demand in the imperial elections of 1900–1901 in the struggle with the Catholic parties. However, they were unsuccessful in their attempt and the Cyril-Methodius idea actually became an integral part of the Catholic parties’ political platforms, which they used in the ideological battle against the liberals and social democrats.
