Description | The development of rationality and science during European Enlightenment was associated with the idea of unstoppable progress of mankind. The Enlightenment and the idea of progress, however, also brought the misuse of technologies and the application of technological reason. Rationality and science are, nevertheless, still the fundamental values of European civilization and culture. The timelessness of values does not inhere in their constancy or invariable meaning, but in the fact that they have always been part of our value system. Overcoming the negative consequences of objectivist and instrumental rationality presupposes the restoration of the human assumption of existence and meaning of this world. |
