| Description | Medieval law is usually characterized as being predominantly unwritten, unsystematic and inconsistent. To address these issues, legal historians refer to medieval legal pluralism or the coexistence of diverse legal orders emanating from diverse social groups and operating within the same area. In the Czech lands in the High Middle Ages we come across the land, town and canon law. But to what extent were these legal "worlds" isolated? In our paper we will demonstrate whether and how legal relationships were established and developed between aristocratic and urban communities. We will draw on particular examples from the sources of Bohemian origin from the 13th and 14th centuries. |
