Description Using the sequence of the nuclear genome of red clover (Trifolium pratense) we identified genes encoding essential enzymes of the isoflavonoid (phytoestrogen) biosynthetic pathway. Specific primers were designed for some of the genes encoding enzymes chalcone synthase (EC2.3.1.74) and 6’-deoxychalcone synthase (EC2.3.1.170). Their expression was characterized in a sample of plants of the genus Trifolium using PCR method. Results were correlated with the amount of phytoestrogens contained in these plants. Relationship between the amount of phytoestrogens in plants T. pratense variety Pramedi and the expression level of studied genes was not confirmed. Larger differences in expression of the genes were observed when comparing different varieties of T. pratense and when comparing T. pratense with T. medium (zigzag clover). Expression of candidate genes needs to be further quantified by real time PCR.
