| Description | The Jewish community in Hustopeče (Auspitz) existed only thirty years, however, the materials obtained grant relatively detailed information about their origin and their downfall. The Jewish community in Hustopeče was a new, without continuous settlement tradition. The Prince Charles of Liechtenstein allowed in 1623 the Jews to settle in the city. The Christian citizens were this act hostile. Also worth mentioning is the argumentative features of citizens and the style of their complaints against the Jews. The Jews of Hustopeče sent to the prince several letters in which refuted the arguments of Christian citizens. Among them is an extraordinary by its soundness Memorial from 1648, whose author could have been in all probability of acting in the near-by Mikulov Moravian rabbi Menahem Mendel ben Avraham Krochmal. The situation completely changed a decision of the Moravian Diet of 1 September 1650 according to which Jews were allowed to live only in places where they had lived on 1. January 1618. This provision also concerned the Jews oh Hustopeče. Although Prince of Liechtenstein tried to reach an exception to the Kaiser for Jews of Hustopeče, his requests were not answered. The last Jews left the city by July 1651. The article describes the circumstances of the rise and demise of the Jewish community in Hustopeče, but also the social and economic status of its members. |
