Description The issue of dreams and the way they were perceived in the past has not been fully reflected in the Czech historiography. This workshop explores dreams in the wider historical context from the Middle Ages (respectively ancient tradition) till the end of 19th century when the place and function of dreams in the society radically changed due to the development of modern psychology and psychoanalytic concept of dreams. The starting point for our discussions in the workshop is a narrow definition of a dream, which does not include visions or Divine inspiration. Rather than aiming at forming one single framework to the interpretation of dreams, we are oriented to apply several possible approaches to the study of dreams in pre-modern society. That is why we are bringing together researchers interested in the study of dreams´ visual representation and dreams´ contemporary interpretations from the perspective of different fields: history, art history and history of literature. The papers of the workshop will thus address questions such as, what where the historical reasons that led to take dreams and their interpretation seriously, in other words, what led to the legitimisation of dreams relevance, what was the reference to Christianity (what was considered being unacceptable in dreams – f. e. future prediction), why is there a lack of visual evidence of dreams for older historic period (problems of visual representation of dreams in general). Other possible topics of the workshop are dreams as instruments of entering other dimensions and the dark side of dreams. Last but not least the attention will be devoted to dream books that represent a cultural encounter of popular and scholarly approaches to dreams.
