Description | Doctoral thesis Trends in scholar publishing: mapping the situation and attitude towards open access explores the issue of scholar publishing with the focus on the trends in editing and publishing peer-reviewed journals. The thesis sums up the evolution of scholar publishing – especially the new trends of open access and the changes of economical models and the peer-review process in its theoretical part. It includes the discussion of possible theoretical approaches in a broad context of information science – especially in the field of science and technology studies (STS), social informatics or information ecology. In the practical part the thesis brings the results of two researches. The first maps the situation regarding journals publishing in the Czech Republic and is based on results of a survey in which over 300 editors took part. The second approaches the field from a different perspective – from the viewpoint of the authors–scientists. The analysis of both researches comes to the conclusion that even though open access is quite common in the Czech Republic, its usage is firmly rooted in the traditional publishing models and the potential of open access has not been fully used. |
