Description Raman spectroscopy is an analytical method with a broad range of applications across multiple scientific fields including microbiology. Our work shows a possibility to differentiate among gram-positive species commonly found in clinical material–all belonging to the genus Staphylococcus–using Raman spectroscopy. We tested 64 strains, 33 of Staphylococcus aureus and 31 of coagulase-negative staphylococci (namely 11 of Staphylococcus epidermidis, 7 of Staphylococcus hominis, 6 of Staphylococcus haemolyticus and 7 of Staphylococcus capitis) directly from bacterial colonies grown on a Mueller-Hinton agar plate. The method showed a great potential to separate S. aureus from coagulase-negative staphylococci.
