Description The cultural dimensions are the one of the most cited theories in cross-cultural research. Cross-cultural psychology – a discipline defined by comparison of cultures – uses cultural dimensions as a reference tool for comparison of cultures and their psychological differences and similarities. The concept of individualism-collectivism has a prominent place among cultural dimensions; it is probably the most frequently elaborated concept in both theoretical and empirical cross-cultural psychology. Despite the fact, the concept of individualism and collectivism is shrouded by many myths and inaccuracies. The limits of its usability in empirical research are both of a methodological nature and in its theoretical anchorage. We perceive its better theoretical anchoring and the development and validation of measurement tools of individualism and collectivism as one of the crucial requirements of the development of cross-cultural research in the Central European region.
