Description | The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, it aims to introduce the concept of toritate in the Japanese linguistics with focus on the transition from “adverbial particles” (fukujoshi) within the framework of the National Language Studies (kokugogaku) to “toritate expressions” (toritate hyogen) within the framework of the Japanese Language Studies (nihongogaku). Second, it will introduce and report on an ongoing research project of the toritate phenomena from a crosslinguistic perspective. The project is organized by the Japanese National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (NINJAL) and covers studies on various languages of the world. |
