Description This article deals with the relevance of the positional criterion for the classification of derivational morphemes in Spanish. Besides being the defining characteristic of the prefixes, suffixes and interfixes, the fixed position of the true prefixes and suffixes was often used as an argument to deny the status of a derivational morpheme to all the positionally mobile elements (e.g. logo, filo). Nevertheless, the same criterion of positional stability may also raise doubts about the status of interfixes identical to appreciative suffixes (-ej-/-ejo, -urr-/-urro, etc.), which are practically the only interfixes endowed with meaning.
