Description In the early parts of the text, we differentiate the traditional and the systematic concept of extremism. The systematic view allows us to identify an essential feature of extremism - the trend towards tribal thinking. This feature explains the very essence of extremism – the compulsion to simplify a complex modern society which could be done by extreme means only. In next part of the text, we are, thanks to the systematic interpretation, able to explain what the different types of extremism has in common. We did it even in such seemingly diverse currents of thought, such as the Enlightenment universalism, nationalism, and Islamistic universalism. In all these types, there is – again – a propensity to simplify a complex social reality of modern society. At the end of the text, the rise of extremism is explained as the manifestation of unfinished modernization. This last stage of the interpretation helps us to discriminate what gives rise to failure of our today’s political representation.
