Description | This contribution attempts first to situate Franz Hellens, a Belgian author of the turning of the 20th century, into the context of the Belgian literature written in French. Then, the concept of ‘fantastic real’ – a concept invented by Hellens – is briefly explained. The analysis is based on Hellens’ conception of the dream. Finally, we analyse in more detail his short stories of magical realism, showing the role played by the dream: certain features in the autobiographical work by Hellens are identified, which helps demonstrate his unique way of reworking the concept of autobiography in the light of the fantastic. |
