Description Fear is usually seen as primarily negative emotion, but there can also be distinguished a number of positive aspects. Fear alerts us to what is important in life, has motivational effect, and can be effectively used in the process of building psychological resilience. Understanding fear and overcoming it can be an important step towards personal growth and wisdom. The lecture offered a broader view of the possible positive relationships and consequences of fear. Then we presented the results of two empirical studies carried out within the international project Hope Barometer, which also included the topic of fear. The first study revealed a relationship with the experienced fear to level of life satisfaction, hope and depression. In a second study we examined the psychosocial context of fear of immigrants. The results indicated that the smaller concerns and greater openness towards immigrants show respondents reporting greater optimism and empathy and reaching a higher level of education. Finally, several ways how to use fear in a positive and meaningful way were suggested.
