Description Fieldwork is like a rite of passage for any anthropologist. The old ´I´ dies away, the new ´I´ is born through it. We are never the same after spending time in another culture. Through fieldwork we discover our depths, weaknesses, loves, emotions and sorrows, while trying to get rid of them in order to stay ´on the objective side´. In the end, we nevertheless discover the inevitable: i.e. that this is not possible. We are forced to acknowledge ourselves in all our nakedness, disposed to the utmost. Yet, this can be extremely precious for science too, since it exposes our other ´self´ not only upon the personal level but also upon the level of the society we come from and we currently live in. In this opening lecture of the conference, Irena Kašparová will introduce her fieldwork in Sri Lanka, ranging from study in racism in Sri Lankan education system, through to Muslim schools, socialist hospitals and reflection of the status of a single white woman, academic and mother with four children doing fieldwork in South Asia and Czech Republic.
