Description | The translation of the standardized foreign method is the most effective way of developing new diagnostic methods not only in personal psychology. The author of the adaptation does not have to invest such large time resources e.g. in the literature search or in the multi-step pilot testing. Unfortunately, the temptation to just translate and immediately use the new test in industrial/organization practice or in a research is often too strong. In the best case, only translation design is documented and carefully chosen, or the selected psychometric parameters of the method in the new environment are also verified. Even in these cases, however, there are some distortions that are the stronger, the more the language-based method (e.g., the attention test vs. the rating scale) and the more distinct the two cultural environments. As a rule, information on factor structure, validity, reliability, and not at all about standards, cannot be ignored without thinking; It is a frequent phenomenon that the "difficulties" of different language versions are diametrically different. The problem, however, is already in the construct validity - it is not possible under all the circumstances to assume the existence and invariance of the same psychological constructs across cultures. However, these differences in performance can be verified, for example, by confirmatory factor analysis or DIF analysis. The issue of adaptation, translation and intercultural testing is devoted to a large number of professional literature, and there are also guidelines that regulate the adaptation. So I will introduce the typical pitfalls associated with the adaptation of methods in the personalistic context, present the available standards, guidelines and literature and I will also mention "best practices" including practical recommendations for the transfer of methods into the Czech language in the context of research and practical diagnostics. |
