Description The contribution dealt with selected characteristics of the work with sources in the surviving travelogue of the Czech renaissance nobleman Christopher Harant. First, the place of ancient time horizon in the travelogue was evaluated, then the nature of factual and formal errors stemming from the specifics of Harant's work with sources was introduced. Afterwards, the contribution focused on one of the characteristic formal deficiencies of the travelogue, secondary quotations that are not admitted by the author, and related problems. Harant's travelogue must be held in high esteem for its remarkably wide range of authorities and works quoted, whether it concerns the time span of works he used or at least knew from his reading (from antiquity to his present), or their genre and thematic range (history, geography, law, philosophy, religion, natural sciences etc.). After a thorough analysis, though, it turns out that a certain amount of authorities Harant refers to he quotes without actually having worked with them. These non-admitted secondary quotations helped him considerably broaden his already large base of authorities, which give the support for his travelogue-encyclopaedia. However, taking quotations over from other sources has caused certain shortcomings, which in turn reduce the scientific value of the travelogue (referring to non-preserved sources, to incorrect sources, corrupt names of authorities).
