Description This contribution explores how to analyze the intelligibility of (emergent) standard varieties of Dutch for learners of Dutch as a foreign language. Based on Grondelaers, Van Hout & Van Gent (2016) three (standard) varieties of Belgian Dutch and Netherlandic Dutch are discussed; regional varieties and dialects are not taken into account. The question is to what extent these varieties cause intelligibility problems for learners of Dutch as a foreign language with a Slavic mother tongue. Based on existing publications (e.g. Impe 2010) and a small-scale experiment, we formulate hypotheses and put forward possible research methods.
