Description The work provides an inventory of 17th- and 18th-century ceiling paintings in the milieu of the Benedictine monasteries on the territory of the Czech lands. It had its origin as part of a broader project of art-historical documentation and interpretation of Baroque ceiling paintings which is being developed by the Institute of Art History of the Czech Academy of Sciences in cooperation with other Czech and international specialist workplaces. The inventory section of this work is introduced by an extensive study devoted to the patronage of the arts by the Benedictine order and the nature of artistic projects in Czech Benedictine monasteries and two short chapters which describe the main forms of cycles of ceiling paintings in relation to the function of monastic buildings respective provide profiles of the painters who worked in the Czech Benedictine monasteries.
