Description The aim of this study is to introduce a linguistic construct for description of the content of [Noun phras + wa] and [Noun phrase + ga] in modern Japanese and to evaluate characteristics of these constructions with relation to the general linguistic category of SUBJECT. The study is grounded in functional and cognitive linguistics approaches. The analysis is situated into a broader context of Japanese linguistic theories related to (grammatical) subject. It also introduces the evolution of the category of SUBJECT in the western theoretical linguistics, as well as the dynamism of attempts to apply it on the description of the Japanese language's structure.
