Description | Translation of legal texts, just like translations of other technical texts, has its specific features. The key aspect for assessing the quality of translation of legal text is the precise accuracy of its legal meaning. Affected by contemporary legal system and codes, one might expect the text of the Digests of Justinian (i.e. a part of the historically most important codification of law) to be stylistically cohesive and identical expressions used with the same meaning – however, it is just the opposite case, as the Digests are a compilation of works of various lawyers from various centuries, thus, written in a quite different manner. Finally, we can observe, that some expressions cannot be translated into the target language at all, in such a case it is necessary to leave the expression untranslated or to use a periphrastic construction, which can be excessively long, or the expression in question theoretically can be translated, but its meaning in the target language is confusing. |
