Description | The paper dealt with the question of the level of knowledge of ancient and Byzantine Greek from the part of the Bohemian nobleman Christopher Harant of Polzice and Bezdruzice (1564-1621). Or, the question was, to what extent it is possible to assess his knowledge of Greek on the basis of his travel book (released in 1608). The paper sought out evidence in favor of / against the hypothesis that Harant worked with Greek works in the original. The arguments against the aforementioned hypothesis that were presented are the small amount of Greek words and texts in the travel book, the existence of Latin (or even vernacular) translations of Greek works quoted in the travel book in Harant's times, and the way Harant works with primary and secondary sources in general (i.e. primary but often also unacknowledged secondary quotations). |
