Description | An analysis of ancient sources about imagines points to the problem of definitively identifying them with mere postmortem masks. Their shape was more likely to resemble busts, or perhaps their form may not have been steady, but could have allowed more forms. All the visual imagery that we have preserved to date, are imagines in the form of an entire head and not a mask covering only a face. |
