Description | The article focuses on the existence of two different terminologies that envolved in the course of time in order to work with and describe medieval and early modern diplomatic material. This resulted in the gradual growing apart of medieval diplomatics from early modern diplomatics and their turning into independent disciplines, which is particularly apparent in German terminology (Urkundenlehre vs. Aktenkunde). The author offers a new system connecting both parts of diplomatics and he regards it as a single scholarly discipline whose object, aim, methods of inquiry and procedures are the same, regardless of the possible differences in examining medieval, early modern or modern material. The proposed solution aims at an elimination of terminological misunderstandings. |
