Description The monograph is concerned with theatre career of Karel Novák (1916–1968), a director, who has been unjustly overshadowed by other directors of his generation (1950s and 1960s, Czechoslovakia), such as Otomar Krejča, Alfréd Radok and Ota Ornest. While being forced to move to regional theatres by Communist regime several times, and despite censorship and various restrictions, he nevertheless succeeded in launching demanding and ambitious productions in a form of poetic allegories, depending largely on a number of accomplished actors he collaborated with frequently (Blanka Bohdanová, Ilja Racek, etc.). His dramaturgy concerns two main thematic strands: powerful stories narrated by poetic means, and up-to-date social satires. The final stage of Novák’s professional career covers his employment in E. F. Burian Theatre in the 1960s.
